- What if my brackets
become loose?
- What if the
archwire or headgear is broken, or a hook
is lost?
- What if there
is a wire sticking out and poking my mouth?
- What foods should
be avoided during treatment?
- What if my mouth
feels sore ?
- What can I do
to help insure the success of my treatment?
If your brackets become loose, it means
that the seal created by the cement has
broken. Call right away and schedule an
appointment. If the band detaches from the
wire, save it to bring with you.
These types of problems could cause the
teeth to shift in the wrong direction and
must be corrected as soon as possible. Call
right away and schedule an appointment.
Try tucking it in with the eraser part
of a pencil. If that does not work, dry
it with a napkin and place wax over the
tip of the wire to prevent further irritation.
Wax can also be applied to a bracket or
a hook that is causing discomfort.
Your braces are precise appliances that
can be damaged by eating hard foods. Some
soft and sticky foods can cause tooth decay
and dislodge your braces.
Avoid hard foods like:
Hard Candy, Corn Chips, Popcorn, Ice, Nuts,
Pizza Crust, Corn on the Cob.
Avoid soft sticky foods like:
Chewing Gum, Soft Candy, Tootsie Rolls,
Gummy Bears (and Gummy Worms and so forth),
Caramels and Taffy.
Your mouth may be sore from time to time,
especially immediately following an adjustment.
To relieve soreness, rinse your mouth with
warm salt water and take Advil or Tylenol
as directed.
- Keep your braces and other dental appliances
impeccably clean.
- Wear elastics as required ( you may
take them out to eat)
- Keep scheduled appointments.
- Keep your teeth clean by brushing and
flossing after meals.
- Maintain a healthy diet, avoid sweets,
sugary snacks, and drinks.
